Projects
Example designs for video and audio on Cloudflare, from uploads and encoding to live, captions and analytics.
Video without servers
A video platform used to mean running machines: encoders, storage, origin servers, and media servers for live. Stream, R2, Containers and Workers now cover most of that. You still need the engineering that is specific to your product: who can upload and watch, how the ladder is built, what happens when a job fails, and what it costs at your volume.
What each page covers
- A sequence diagram of the design, step by step
- The Cloudflare products used, and what each one does
- The decisions, with the reason for each
- The platform limits that apply
- What you get at the end of the project
These are designs, not client case studies. Platform limits are taken from Cloudflare's documentation and change over time.
The projects
None of these involve DRM. For content protection, see the DRM solutions below.
- Serverless video platformUploads, encoding, captions and signed playback with no servers to run
- FFmpeg encoding on Cloudflare ContainersYour own ladder and packaging, started by an upload, served from R2
- Sub-second live with WHIP and WHEPLive auctions, Q&A and watch-alongs where a few seconds of delay is too much
- Searchable video archiveFind the moment in hours of recordings by what was said
- Thumbnails and previews by URLHover previews, thumbnails and storyboards for a clip library, with no batch jobs
- Instant clips from a live streamViewers clip the moment they just saw and share it while the event is still on
- One live feed to many platformsSend one encoder feed to your own site and to YouTube, Twitch and others at once
- Private video delivery from R2Pre-encoded HLS served from R2 through a Worker, with signed links that expire
- Podcast hosting with fair download countsEpisodes served from R2, with downloads counted once per listener per day
- Captions in more languagesTranslate a video's captions with Workers AI, review them, and add each language to the player
- Player telemetry on Analytics EngineStartup time, stalls and errors from your own players, stored and queried on Cloudflare
DRM solutions
Three corporate use cases, each with a Widevine demo that runs in your browser and checks what your device supports.
